Horn of Africa
I can't get these images off my mind and I pray you can't either. Please join me in praying for the Horn Of Africa. These people are experiencing true starvation- they are in the midst of the worst drought in 60 years. You may be thinking where is the Horn of Africa?
Why are they in such a famine? Livestock are dropping dead, food prices are through the roof and more than 11 million people (a number that is growing) are in need of assistance in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti. The arid conditions are feeding famines in Somalia, where the United Nations says malnutrition rates have approached 50 percent in some areas, the highest rates in the world.
Tens of thousands of people have died in the past few months. East Africa right now is the world's "worst humanitarian disaster" according to the chief of the United Nations' Refugee Agency. Here's a taste of what's happening:
The world’s largest refugee camp in northern Kenya, Dadaab, is now at over four times its original capacity (90,000) with around 380,000 refugees from surrounding countries. Those arriving are severely malnourished and dehydrated and in need of immediate assistance.
There is not enough room in the refugee camp to help the nearly 1,500 who are arriving daily. Many are forced to stay outside the camp without water, food, and medical help.
They eagerly wait outside of the gates to be registered and receive the help they so desperately need.
Please say an extra prayer for the women and children who are on the move, they are especially vulnerable to rape and abduction.
What can you do to help? UNICEF
There is so much going on in my heart right now. I just can't imagine being a mother, homeless, sick, desperate, tired, and watching my children literally starve to death. Please pray!
